ELDERLY MINNESOTAN COUPLE WON $229M POWERBALL JACKPOT
August 16, 2011

Last Friday, around 2:30 pm, Thomas and Kathleen Morris from Burnsville, Minnesota, entered the headquarters of the Minnesota State Lottery and finally claimed the awesome $229 million Powerball jackpot. The couple stated they were down on their luck and had serious problems with money, so the prize could not have come at a better time. Lottery numbers

It started on Monday,” Kathleen Morris stated. “We met with our financial adviser and things didn’t look very promising. I told Tom the only way we’re going to retire is if we win the lottery.”

The lucky winners of the biggest jackpot ever won in Minnesota purchased their lottery tickets at a SuperAmerica, located at 16161 Cedar Avenue, Lakeville. Thomas Morris said he usually doesn’t buy more than 3 tickets for Powerball, but decided to “splash some cash” and buy 5 for the draw held on August 10. National lottery

“I told the kid at the counter, you don’t need to sell anymore, I’ve got the winning ticket,” Thomas Morris said.

All the lottery tickets were quick picks and it looks like the fourth ticket was the lucky one. Kathleen Morris said they kept the jackpot winning ticket in a plastic bag to protect it. Lottery results

“We didn’t want to lose it, we didn’t want to tear it, we didn’t want to soil it,” Thomas Morris added.

When Kathleen Morris first saw the lottery numbers announcement, her husband was on a trip to Indiana. She didn’t think much about it as she didn’t believe those were numbers either of them would have picked.

However, the couple later watched the news and head that someone in Dakota County managed to win the Powerball jackpot and the Powerball number was 38. They then rushed to check the lottery tickets and finally realized the news was all about them.

They haven’t chosen the mode of payment yet as they plan on discussing it with their financial advisor. However, Kathleen said this one would be a much more pleasant conversation than the one they had last Monday. They have the option of choosing a 30 year annuity or the lump sum. The lump sum would leave them with $83.7 million after all the taxes have been subtracted.

“We’re just going to live the way we have, just a little bit higher,” Kathleen Morris stated.

Well, that’s about it on the matter for now. Congratulations to the lucky winner and we hope next time we’ll write about you.
