Last week, the “13 Investigates” recorded a video inside the lottery offices for the very first time, showing the lottery’s many conference rooms filled with completely new furniture, a very spacious and impressive break room with bar stools that cost around $800 and flat screen televisions, it even includes a private gym with the top-most equipment that cost more than $25,000.
During the press conference given, the lottery commission and the lottery director admitted publicly that there was an error in judgment because they were not monitoring closely their expenses. Because of this the entire workout room will be closing down.
“It was an error in judgment and we’ll take the necessary actions to get that back into compliance. We’re talking specifically about the workout room. We’ll either find other places to use that equipment or we’ll sell that equipment. We’ll find an appropriate use for that space,” said William Zielke, Hoosier Lottery Commission chairman.
According to Zielke he says that he wasn’t even aware of some of the costly purchases until he actually saw them on television.
He has assured that every purchase related to the new offices will now be monitored and scrutinized closely, which was not the case before this report was aired on TV. According to Zielke, the person who approved all these purchases is Kathryn Densborn, the lottery´s director.
On the show, Densborn had proudly showed “13 Investigates” around the new headquarters. During the conference, she looked much more serious as she answered questions about a workout gym that is being shut down and other costly purchases she made for the lottery’s new offices. She admitted to an error in judgment and proposed that she would do everything possible to fix this error.
