Well, everything started in April 1985, when Iowa’s lawmakers decided that the time has come to create a government operated lottery. Lottery tickets appeared on the market on August 22, 1985, and there was even a celebration for the event at the Iowa State Fair. State lottery

The first game introduced by the Iowa Lottery was the Scratch, Match and Win, an instant win scratch game. The game was extremely successful, and more than 6.4 million lottery tickets were sold in the first week. That would be just the first in many successes. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being raised by the Iowa Lottery ever year.

Besides the money that goes to prizes, there are four other destinations for the lottery’s proceedings. The money goes to help the Iowa Gambling Treatment Program, the Vision Iowa program, funding for various veterans programs and a wide range of important projects funded by the state’s general fund. The lottery started to put money into the state’s general fund in 1992. That’s where most of the lottery’s profit goes and all the citizens of Iowa get to benefit from it. In 2010, the Iowa State Lottery gave the general fund $57.2 million. The money is being used for health and family services, natural resources, public safety and education.

The lottery has also been helping the Vision Iowa program since 2000. It was created to build and repair schools, promote tourism destinations and other purposes.

As of 2008, a part of the lottery proceeds are being sent to the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund. Approximately $3 million from instant win scratch games go to the Trust Fund annually. The Trust Fund was created so qualified veterans would benefit from assistance and get help with paying for college tuition, medical help, counseling problems and job training.

The games you can play at the Iowa Lottery are: Pick 3, Pick 4, $100,000 Cash Game, Hot Lotto, Powerball and Mega Millions. Also, the Iowa Lottery was the first to raise the minimum playing age to 21, so don’t even consider playing if you are younger than that.
