Well, it was awesome while it lasted, at least for the few groups of gamblers who knew how to exploit it. The Cash WinFall game, which was heavily mentioned in our news recently, had a secret. Whenever the jackpot reached $2 million, the non jackpot prizes increased tremendously. A few groups of smart lottery players knew about that, so whenever the jackpot rose, they invested in hundreds of thousands of lottery tickets. Even though they did not win the jackpot, they did not play a game of chance. Many of them actually made millions in profit from non jackpot prizes. National lottery
Gerald and Marjorie Selbee from Michigan, both 73 years old, regularly traveled to Massachusetts to play the Cash WinFall game. The stores where the old couple plied their trade were very happy to have them, as they would also receive their part of the winnings.
“They did nothing nefarious or illegal, and it’s unfortunate that they’ve been portrayed otherwise,” Beth Bresneham, the marketing director for the Massachusetts Lottery, stated. “There’s a perception that people with more money do better.”
However, the Massachusetts State Lottery became alarmed when everything went public. The lottery did not want its public image splattered, so officials decided to change the game. Lottery numbers
“The integrity of the lottery is our priority,” Bresnehan said. “It’s critical to our success. We want people to know that when they play, they have the same chance of winning.”
Steven Grossman, the Massachusetts State Treasurer, announced that no store will be allowed to sell more than $5,000 worth of Cash WinFall lottery tickets per day, so nobody will be able to exploit the game again. However, the couple of stores where Marjorie and Gerald Selbee bought their tickets have lost their license to sell tickets.
“I’m hoping that, yes, my license will be restored because I’ve got people that want to buy their tickets here,” Paul Mardas, owner of the liquor store in Sunderland, stated. Lottery checker
Steven Grossman added that the game will not be canceled, as it still turns out a nice amount of sales. Things will just be altered a bit, so the game will offer equal chances for all those who play it. Lottery winning numbers
“I want to assure the public that the Cash WinFall game is not in any way compromised and is providing an urgently needed $11 million in annual profit to the Commonwealth,” Grossman said in a statement. “There is nothing wrong with the game itself.”
