NEW YORK LOTTERY, SUCCESS AND CRITICISM
July 18, 2011

All the recent news about the New York State Lottery prompted us to write a piece about its history. In its decades of existence, the New York State Lottery has contributed billions for good causes, and we would like to honor that by telling all you fans how it came into being. US lottery

Before the 20th century, New York used lotteries to gather funding for its many needs. Few people know that the New York City Hall was partly built with lottery money. Lotteries were also used to improve the state’s infrastructure, by repairing and building roads, bridges, ferries and canals. And it was the lotteries who helped build churches and develop some of New York’s industries. Lottery results

However, the New York government ordered for a referendum in 1966, which would decide whether a state lottery run by the government should be founded. 60 percent of voters were in favor, mainly because all the money made by the lottery would go to education. The New York lawmakers created the State Lottery Commission and the Division of the Lottery in 1967. However, the lottery was later revamped as an autonomous organization in the Department of Taxation and Finance. Since 1967, the New York State Lottery yielded over $34 billion for education. However, things weren’t always great for the New York State Lottery, as it was closed for 9 months in the mid 70s. There have been other problems over the years, but the New York State Lottery managed to pull through and become one of the most successful lotteries in the United States.

In 2009, lottery officials reached an agreement with Powerball and Mega Millions, and lottery tickets for these two inter-state lottery games were on the New York market on January 31, 2010.

Even though the New York State Lottery has the highest sale rates in the United States, some believe it could improve, especially in the player return area. It appears that most neighboring lotteries offer a better return for players. For example, the NY Lotto has a prize return of 40 percent, the lowest in the United States.

Some of the lottery’s other games are: Powerball, Mega Millions, Sweet Million, Numbers, Win 4, Take 5, Pick 10 and Quick Draw.

That’s about it on the New York State Lottery. We will return soon with news about all the lotteries in the United States.
