TO SPLIT A JACKPOT OR NOT TO SPLIT A JACKPOT
July 13, 2011

It is believed that the human behavior is usually fueled by self interest. A group of employees from the state of New York might be the ones to prove it wrong, as they are thinking about sharing a $19 million jackpot with 5 other colleagues that did not participate at that week’s lottery pool. For many years, the employees put their money together and tried their luck at the lotteries, and they were finally repaid when they managed to hit the big jackpot. US lottery

There are many who believe that sharing a jackpot with someone who didn’t pitch in is a ludicrous idea but, according to some psychological studies, lottery winners get far less pleasure from daily activities as more money usually means that other things are much less important. also, it appears that most people feel happiness and pleasure when they share their earnings with others. Apparently, being kind and generous activates the same brain area that is lit up when you eat something yummy or have sex. Studies have also shown that some people are far happier when they spend money for the benefit of others than when spending it for selfish reasons. Lottery results

And as the group of employees have been a lottery team for so many years, they will be far more inclined to help their “brothers in lottery tickets”. Researchers believe that a man is much more likely to be generous with a member of his team and humans in general are actually willing to split some winnings, especially if they believe it to be fair. The Harvard University made an experiment with 3 year old children. They split them into teams and got them to compete, but awarded the prize to only one kid from the winning team. However, even though the child was so small, he almost always shared his prize with his teammate.

This just comes to show that even though selfishness is a big issue in today’s society, most of humanity is inherently good. Even though our survival instincts sometimes make us act in terrible ways, human individuals still have a drive to do good unto their peers.

The group’s decision to split the money warms our hearts a bit and makes us believe in the human race a bit more. That’s about it for now, but return soon if you want to hear the latest news from the world of lotteries.
