WISCONSIN GAINS FROM MINNESOTA SHUT DOWN
July 12, 2011

It appears that the Iowa Lottery isn’t the only one benefiting from the crash in Minnesota. At Wisconsin’s border with Minnesota, lottery tickets are practically flying off the counter, and retailers have only inept Minnesota lawmakers to thank. US lottery

“You know how much people, they just want to buy lottery,” Mac Qasem, a gas station owner from Houlton, Wisconsin, stated. It appears that lottery sales have increased 5-fold ever since the Minnesota State Lottery went down. Lottery results

“You just cross the bridge, couple of blocks and you’re here,” Mac Qasem added. “The Minnesota state lottery is shut down, so they come here looking for luck.”

“We’ve been hearing some pretty eye popping statistics like that. And really we’re hearing them all across the board,” Andrew Bohage, a spokesperson for the Wisconsin State Lottery, stated. It appears that Qasem’s increase in profits is the rule and not the exception. Bohage stated that there are many reports coming from quite a few localities, including Fountain City, Hudson and Prescott, all presenting similar stories to that of Mac Qasem. National lottery

Bohage expressed his regrets for Minnesota’s misfortune, but “we always welcome the chance to raise some more revenue for our lottery’s mission which is to offset property taxes here in Wisconsin.”

“Can’t cash ‘em, can’t sell ‘em, can’t sell scratch-offs — nothing,” Alan Cassady said from his gas station in Minnesota. “I can’t even sign on. They say they need a Powerball so they’re going over to Wisconsin.”

Alan Cassady said he feels anguish when he has to turn away people who want to purchase lottery tickets, even now, nearly 2 weeks after the lottery went down.

“For the time being I’ll just come across here so it’s no problem for me,” Gary Wichelmann, a Minnesotan who now purchases lottery tickets from Wisconsin, stated.

As for those on the Wisconsin part of the border, things are going great. Sam Qasem said that those who buy lottery tickets also pick up groceries and other goods, so sales are going through the roof for almost everything. Meanwhile, 140 Minnesota State Lottery employees are not getting their paychecks while the lottery is losing around $1.25 million for each passing day.

The situation looks dire, but we still hope it will be resolved as soon as possible. Return soon if you want to hear more news on this matter and everything else related to lotteries.
